Lisa Sullivan is a specialist in clinical negligence, personal injury and regulatory work.

Lisa has experience of a wide range of clinical negligence claims from high value cerebral palsy and missed spinal injury claims, to claims including failure to diagnose appendicitis, miscarriage following hysteroscopy, failure to diagnose testicular torsion in a 16 year old leading to sterility, damage to femoral nerve, failure to review following laser eye treatment, negligent hip and knee replacement surgeries and dental negligence claims.

Her experience in personal injury covers road traffic claims, including severe spinal injury claims, workplace claims and disease claims, including fatal accident claims, secondary victim claims, injuries following exposure to moving parts of machinery, manual handling claims, work equipment claims and occupational stress.

Lisa also has experience of a full range of quantum issues and in particular local authority care issues.

Lisa appears in the Care Standards Tribunal in cases involving fitness for registration, cancellation of registration and closure of care homes. Cases have included cancellation of registration for a child minder, refusal to register for non-disclosure of spent convictions and closures of care homes for widespread breaches of the regulations. Lisa also regularly appears at inquests (including following deaths in care homes) and in CICA claims and has represented clients at mediations.

She has lectured on a variety of subjects including causation, limitation, capacity, Ogden 6 and the Provision and Use of Workplace Regulations. Lisa is an advocacy trainer for Inner Temple and on the South Eastern Circuit Advanced Advocacy Course.

Recent/important cases

Crofton v NHSLA [2007] EWCA (Civ) 71. Case on the impact of local authority provision of care or direct payments on a tortfeasor's liability for care costs; and on whether damages and the income arising from them should be taken into account by the local authority in assessing the need for care and in the assessment of means. At first instance won Sowden issues as to whether existing local authority funded case was equivalent to adequate compensation (led by Dr Simon Taylor QC).

Collins v Plymouth City Council [2009] EWHC 3279 (Admin). Judicial review case on Crofton issue. Successfully defended claim that the Council's decision to take income from his personal injury award into account when assessing his means for charging for non-residential care was unlawful.

B v Hospital Foundation Trust (Unreported) Incomplete tetraplegia following missed spinal fracture in a 69 year old. Settled for £1.1 million.

B v S NHS Trust (Unreported) Claim for orthopedic injuries following failed suicide attempt by patient in psychiatric ward. Settled for around £150,000.

A v X NHS Trust (Unreported 26.2.09). Cerebral palsy claim. 55% settlement. Settled for a lump sum of £1,300,000 and periodical payments, amounting to an equivalent of around £3.2 million (led by Dr Simon Taylor QC).

Crofton (6.11.08 unreported) settlement of local authority funding issues following CA decision to remit issues to trial judge. Settled for additional sum payable by the Defd of £552,426 (led by Dr Simon Taylor QC).

R v CICA (unreported 16.9.08). Contested 1990 scheme CICA assessment of quantum. Claimant suffered severe head injury as baby and was awarded £2,620,627(led by Dr Simon Taylor QC)

Stewart: RTA. Settled for £1.2m plus indemnity against future care payments from Local Authority of £80,000 pa (led by Dr Simon Taylor QC)

Edwards: Cerebral palsy, short expectation of life. Settled for £2m. Claimant in foster care and involved issue of whether foster parents could claim for care over and above their foster payments (led by Dr Simon Taylor QC)

X v Kent & Medway Towns Strategic Health Authority - listerial meningitis - settled for £3.9m (led by Brian Langstaff QC)
