Jason Galbraith-Marten is primarily an employment specialist. He is named by The Legal 500, The Chambers Guide and Legal Experts as one of the country's leading employment barristers. He was named Chambers and Partners' Employment Junior of the Year in 2009.

Jason has a broad practice. He represents the biggest trade unions and their clients but also acts for a number of blue chip and multinational companies. He is instructed by small high street solicitors, regional practices and by magic circle firms; but also by the leading claimant solicitors, local government and the EHRC. He is particularly regarded for his ability to balance sound commercial judgment with real understanding of, and dedication to, a client's needs.

Jason is Chair of the Industrial Law Society.

Cases

Buckland v. Bournemouth University Higher Education Corporation [2009] IRLR 606 and [2009] ICR 1042, a case that has attracted significant media interest, concerns allegations of 'dumbing down' of academic standards and raises a novel but important point of law on the correct legal test to be applied in constructive dismissal cases.

Brennan v. Sunderland City Council and Others [2008] ICR 955 and [2009] ICR 479 (and related cases: Appleby v. Gateshead Council and Others, Smiles v. GMB and Addison v. North Tyneside Council and Others). All concern equal pay and allegations of discrimination by trade unions.

Allen v. GMB [2008] IRLR 630, CA and [2007] IRLR 752, EAT. Defending a high-profile, national test case concerning allegations of unlawful sex discrimination against the GMB.

Corrigan v. GMB [2008] ICR 197, EAT concerned the proper construction of the union's rulebook and the interpretation of s.108A of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992.

Wetherill v. Birmingham City Council [2007] IRLR 781, CA. A national, multi-party test case concerning 'car user allowance' paid to local government employees.

Bull v. Nottinghamshire & City of Nottingham Fire & Rescue Authority [2007] ICR 1631 CA. A national test case that attracted significant media interest concerning 'co-responding' whereby firefighters were required to answer calls to the ambulance service.

HM Prison Service v. Johnson [2007] IRLR 951, EAT. A complex disability discrimination appeal.
