Profile
David Massarella specialises in discrimination and employment law. His cases have included all types of disability discrimination cases, direct and indirect sex and race discrimination cases, sexual harassment and sexual orientation discrimination. His general employment practice includes unfair and constructive dismissal, union-related dismissal and detriment cases, whistleblowing and TUPE.
He advises and represents claimants and respondents and is instructed by individuals and trade unions, local authorities, corporate employers and by the commissions (Equality and Human Rights Commission and formerly by the Disability Rights Commission and the Commission for Racial Equality). He has appeared in several reported discrimination cases in the EAT and (as junior Counsel) in the Court of Appeal - please see full profile for details. He lectures and gives seminars on employment issues, gives training in advocacy and has written for the Solicitors Journal and for ELA and DLA Briefings.
David read Modern Languages at Magdalen College, Oxford. Before coming to the Bar, he worked for 10 years as a director in theatre and opera, including work for the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne Opera and Salisbury Playhouse. He was called to the Bar in 1999 and became a tenant at Cloisters in October 2000 on completion of 12 months' pupillage there.
