Cloisters supports debate on human rights protection in Europe

12 December 2011

Cloisters is sponsoring an event being put on by the Equality and Diversity Forum this evening (December 13). The speaker will be Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights.

Mr Hammarberg’s speech will discuss the current state of human rights protections in Europe.  He will engage with debates about the role of our Human Rights Act, the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights. This timely debate takes place as the Commission set up by the UK's Coalition Government considers the case for a Bill of Rights.

Prior to taking up his role with the Council of Europe, Mr Hammarberg was the Secretary General of the Stockholm-based Olof Palme International Centre (2002-2005), Ambassador of the Swedish Government on Humanitarian Affairs (1994-2002), Secretary General of ‘Save the Children’ Sweden (1986-1992), and Secretary General of Amnesty International (1980-1986). His many other distinctions include serving as Regional Adviser for Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and as Kofi Annan's appointed representative (SRSG) for human rights in Cambodia.

Cloisters is co-sponsoring the debate with Leigh Day, Malik Karim and Shabir Randeree.
