Sarah Fraser Butlin and Tamar Burton appointed to the Infected Blood Inquiry

Specialist claimant clinical negligence barristers Sarah Fraser Butlin and Tamar Burton have been appointed as lead junior and junior counsel to the Infected Blood Inquiry.

The public inquiry is looking at how thousands of NHS patients were given blood products contaminated with HIV, Hepatitis C and other infections during the 1970s and 1980s in what has been described as the worst-ever NHS treatment disaster.

Following a government consultation the inquiry has been established under the Inquiries Act 2005.  Sir Brian Langstaff, former High Court judge and Cloisters barrister has been appointed as Chair. He said there had already been more than 100,000 documents submitted, with the prospect of lots more to come. Speaking at the start of the inquiry, he said if the campaigners were right there was a "real chance" the numbers affected could rise as there would be people out there who did not yet know they had been infected.

The inquiry is holding preliminary hearings from Monday 24 to Wednesday 26 September.
