Gender Diversity at the Bar? Monitoring your firm’s instructions of Counsel

Cloisters’ barrister, Claire McCann, in her role on the Employment Lawyers Association (ELA) Management Committee, has been privileged to work with Deputy Chair, Marian Bloodworth, to devise and implement a Scheme to monitor the instructions of counsel by reference to gender.

ELA hopes that this initiative will help to promote equitable briefing of counsel, a key to improving gender diversity at the Bar (particularly amongst QCs) and in the Judiciary.  The Scheme was piloted last year by firms represented on ELA’s Management Committee and now all employment law teams (within solicitors firms and in-house) amongst ELA’s membership are encouraged to join the Scheme and monitor their instructions of employment law counsel for the next 3 months by reference to gender.

For more details, see ELA’s website here.
