Cloisters' barrister Emma Darlow Stearn recently hosted a live music fundraiser for the Free Representation Unit, called FRU THE ROOF.
Emma was joined on the night by fellow musical barrister Jasper Gold (1 Crown Office Row), singer Bea Weiss, and Carl Prekopp and Gary Lilburn of The Fircones.
The event was featured in The Times today ('Striking a chord', 14 May 2026) and raised £1,645 (and counting) for FRU.
Emma explains the inspiration for the fundraiser:
“The difference between navigating a hearing as a litigant in person and doing so with the benefit of legal assistance can be stark. FRU plays a vital role in helping to level the playing field. In my past career, music featured heavily; in my present career, FRU features heavily! — so I decided to bring those two worlds together to raise funds in support of FRU’s work. I have been completely blown away by the generosity of people’s donations.”
With special thanks to the musicians who performed and donated their fees, the venue (Jam in a Jar), everyone who attended, and all those who contributed so generously.
If you would like to donate, contributions can still be made via the JustGiving page.
